Finally, use an aux send to create a parallel compression chain for the vocal. Use extremely fast attack and release times, super-aggressive ratios, and excessive amounts of compression to create a pumping, slamming performance that’s full of energy. Then, gently blend in the results with the original. A common trick is to use an 1176 in “British Mode” or “all-buttons-in,” as it adds a colorful distortion that helps vocals cut through the mix.
It also had bass and treble controls that provided an EQ for the effect. You could also take inputs from multiple sources (mic, instrument) and a mixer, all easily accessible from the front panel. Roland had the foresight to design something that was meant to be played and interacted with. They didn’t just see this as a tape delay with a wet/dry knob, they saw the potential this had to help creative people articulate the music they heard in their head.

I started doing these critiques to solve the practical problems of grading my classes in a meaningful way, and of keeping my early morning sections from staring silently at me with blank expressions. But I’ve noticed that the students take suggestions from the critiques seriously, in a way that they don’t always take the rest of the class. Some kids might blow off assignments and fail to retain technical information from one week to the next, but then they’ll reference a comment about how they should have longer sections in their tracks, months after hearing it.

Whether it’s a live or studio recording environment, mixing is there to achieve balance and glue songs together, both on the microscopic level of individual guitar, drum, or vocal tracks, and on the macroscopic level of tying everything together.
Saturation and distortion are usually used to add bite and roughness to instrumental tracks to help them stand out in a mix. Klanghelm’s IVGI can give you a full spectrum of colors, ranging from subtle saturation and warmth to dirty, grainy distortion. This is a very musical plugin that reacts dynamically to the instrument on which it’s placed, so it doesn’t create any tonal imbalance. You can also control the frequencies that are being saturated to get the detail necessary to make your instruments sound just the way you want.

If you sit down with pen and paper in hand and find that no new ideas are coming your way, consider a fresh perspective in your writing process. If you are used to writing your songs by starting with just an acoustic guitar and vocals, try opening your mind by starting on the piano instead. With the great variety of affordable recording and composing software on the market today, you can have a wide palette of sounds at your fingertips and no longer be limited to just the instruments that you own or have the ability to record at one time. If the idea of recording software makes you anxious, you can get started with something as simple as Apple’s Garageband if you are a Mac user or FL Studio on PC.

One San Juan bar and music venue, however, has transformed itself into an oasis of help and support. El Local has been a boon to the area’s independent music and art scene for years, but now they’re also a resource for people in need: They’re serving meals in a volunteer-run community kitchen, open from morning until evening and closing up just before the government-instated 9:00 p.m. curfew. A food bank filled with mostly non-perishables is continually replenished by donations.
