When saving your projects, make sure that you label them clearly so you can recall their specificities. You can also use folders to organize different projects and versions of songs. Here’s an example of how I often label my tracking projects:
“Get your Boss on with this original collection of line drawings depicting the many faces of Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, the artist behind best-selling albums like Born to Run, The River, Born in the USA, and Chapter and Verse. Flux Bittersweet is a straightforward transient designer that can be used on drums to enhance or dull their attack. To enhance the attack of an instrument, turn the knob towards bitter. To reduce the transients or dull the attack, turn the knob towards the sweet side of the spectrum. This plugin is crucial for getting your drums to sound clear in your mix, whether they’re programmed samples or live recorded drums.
I’m not sure if it’s interesting or anti-interesting that our meter chart matches almost exactly with last year’s, at thirty-seven 4/4s, two 12/8s, and instead of the uncommon gatling gun 24/16, we found a somewhat-rare-in-its-own-right 2/4 meter.
The tone that differentiates the Dorian mode from the standard minor (Aeolian) scale is its major 6th. To create a venerable Dorian sound, we’ll need to exploit the presence of that major 6th, and its contrast with the minor 3rd.
If only I could explain away my Italophilia so simply as just to say it runs in my blood; but I’m Ukranian-Jewish and German. The truth is that I have absolutely no idea how or why I’m so damn interested in that specific place and that specific time. I’ve tried to come up with a lot of reasons over the years, which have included everything from the permissive, freewheeling sexual attitudes of Europe in the late 1960s and early ’70s to the bizarre musical genres that Italian film composers blended — like pop, bossa nova, free-improvisation, contemporary ensemble music, and even cheesy world music cliches — to create this one strangely magnificent strew. But really, it isn’t one thing — it’s everything!
Here’s the thing about the bariolage section, then: Bach goes ahead and uses all the wrong notes. They’re all surprising, but the most surprising one is E♭, the most dissonant possible note in the key of D minor. That would be a bold choice even now. In Bach’s more conservative context, it was unheard of. But the bariolage doesn’t sound wrong at all. Bach carefully organizes all those chromatic notes so they all sound perfectly logical and inevitable. They sound richly strange, but certainly not wrong.

For example, a kick-driven house track needs to be shaped much differently than a lo-fi song with drum parts you want tucked somewhere in the background. Experiment with different EQs and compressors and resist the urge to lean too heavily on preset options. Purposefully muddling certain instruments in your kit while keeping others sharp and focused can also create an interesting contrast to build on.
One of the most unique mentions on this list goes to Rabbit Island, a 91-acre forested island made up of a native ecosystem that stands on solid bedrock and has never been developed or subdivided. It’s home to bald eagles nesting in the trees, lake trout and salmon in the water, and completely devoted to artists taking the time to “investigate and challenge creative practices in a wilderness environment.”

I have been improvising with instruments for 25 years now, in many different idioms: blues, rock, jazz, country, and various kinds of electronic music. Scratching is very different from playing an instrument. Intellectually scratching is something like playing loops in Ableton Live’s Session View, but it’s more like playing an instrument, while triggering loops is more like composing.
Here’s a handy piece of advice from pro audio engineer Joe Lambert. This video appears in Soundfly’s mentored online course, Faders Up I: Modern Mix Techniques.
