If you have an existing instrumental and want to come up with a strong melody, try improvising and experimenting while singing nonsense words. This can help you ignore lyrics entirely to focus on the melody and rhythm of the words. From there, it’ll be easy to write in lyrics to fit the rhythm.
Lyrics and vocal melodies are perhaps the most crucial aspect of working in genres such as folk, rock, pop, and R&B. Lyrics provide a clear, unambiguous musical focal point in the song, and give the listener something to follow. In other genres like EDM and jazz, vocals aren’t a necessity, but frequently show up in one form or another. Regardless, lyrics give songs an extra level on which to be identified.

Before the SM7b became the quintessential radio microphone, the RE-20 was the go-to microphone for broadcasters. Also a large diaphragm dynamic microphone, the RE-20 features an extended frequency range that beefs up vocals with extra bass. A built-in high-pass filter helps prevent muddiness and maintain intelligibility, while the fixed cardioid pickup pattern helps eliminate room noise.
Bridges usually occur after the second chorus and before the last chorus. They’re where you twist your concept one final time, or say anything you might not have had the chance to say up until that point in the song. intros and outros are the lead in and closing out of the song. All three of these things can be instrumental or space filled with some form of lyrics or motif melody. These song sections can add heavy hitting emotion and hooks to capture your listener, basically anywhere you place them.
Tim: Taylor has created some really impressive work this session! Both his technical and creative understanding of his process have exponentially increased over the two sessions we’ve had together. I look forward to the next one!
There are extras you may want or need to purchase, such as a pop shield or pop filter (this is the circular disk that you see in front of a microphone usually made from a nylon material). If you’re using an XLR mic, you’ll also need an XLR cable — I use Jumperz, but Hosa are a cheaper option and Mogami are the best and most expensive. A microphone stand may be helpful too depending on whether your mic came with one included or if you’d like to stand up to read, etc.

You’re also going to need a delay, one way or the other. When it comes to delay pedals, there is analog modulation and digital modulation. Many people automatically point to analog delays to say they are better than digital, but it’s always a question of taste, and most guitarists out there exploring expansive sound palettes will have both on their board. Analog delays sound more like a tape machine; their echoing tone changes the pitch a bit up or down and it’s darker fading out then a digital delay. The latter sounds more like an exact copy of the inserted signal that fades away. If you are a guitarist who likes to tap the delay time with your feet, this will affect your pedal choice as well.
And Ischi really did have the chops! Check out this live performance from 1983, where he sings one of Lang’s own classic tunes, “Mein Vater Ist Ein Appenzeller.”
The frontwoman of the Israeli group Panic Ensemble’s first solo effort covers a lot of ground. Kraus’ versatile pipes carry her through multiple genres from cabaret to orchestral/Balkan pop, maintaining a sensual curiosity throughout. I’m interested to see whether she brings out a full band; her arrangements are as joyously unpredictable as an early Bjork record.
When you compose, do you gravitate toward certain instruments? And how much of the composition is being orchestrated in your inner ear and how much of it are you playing while you write?
